The question

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Hi, i have a tiny black bump on the side of my penis and I don't know what it is. I've had it for about 2-3 months or so. Up close (and i mean extremely close, zoomed in) the black bump looks like an entry way of some kind. Like a hole. But it feels hard when I pinch it. I have a lot of tiny skin-colored bumps which im assuming are fordyce spots. But I can't find information as to what this may be. Any ideas?

The answer

It’s understandable that you’re concerned about the bumps on your penis. Although most are harmless, penile bumps can appear for a variety of reasons.  They may be due to a non-infectious cause like a hair follicle or possibly to a sexually transmitted infection.  As an online resource TeenHealth cannot make a diagnosis.

Since you are concerned about these bumps and want a definitive answer about what they are, FX recommends that you make an appointment with your health care provide. They will examine the area and be able to give you an accurate diagnosis and let you know if any treatment is needed. It’s important to remember that you shouldn’t pop any bumps or apply pimple cream on them as it could make things worse.
