The question
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I have never had a âregularâ period. I started when I was 12, Iâm now 15, and my periods usually go some thing like this... Iâm on my period for like a month or 2 then Iâm not on it for like 3-4 months , and then Iâm on it again for like 3 months and sometimes itâs supper heavy and then I wonât be on it again for like 3 months and then Iâll be on it for only one month this time. Itâs been like that since the beginning Iâve never had the normal â1 week per month periodâ and Iâm starting to worry Iâm if okay.

The answer
Unfortunately, TeenHealthFX cannot diagnose over the internet. Often, when girls start their periods (also known as the menstrual cycle) it can be very irregular. In fact, irregular periods can last for approximately 2 years after getting your first period and no two people have the same exact cycle. [Kids Health explains, periods can be impacted by so many things such as exercise, stress, or weight loss or gain.
Since you mention having your period for a month or more each time, we strongly recommend that you see your medical professional. A doctor will be able to give you a proper exam, determine the cause of your irregular periods, discuss your concerns and treatment options with you. In addition, TeenHealthFX also recommends writing down or putting a note in your cell phone the date of the first day the spotting or period started. Then, every month it can help you keep a record of the first day when spotting or actual bleeding occurs to help you keep track of your periods.
