The question
Dear TeenHealthFX,
hi, I was just wondering if itâs possible to cut your septate hymen on your own?

The answer
TeenHealthFX is glad you asked your question. For our readers who do not know, a hymen is a thin membrane at the vaginal opening. [Young Women's Health explains, "A septate hymen means there is extra hymeneal tissue (more hymen than usual) that looks like a band in the middle. Instead of one small opening in the center, there are two." As a result, it can be difficult for girls to insert tampons during their periods and could potentially cause other issues as girls grow.
We strongly advise you not to cut the hymen yourself, and to see a medical professional to get an accurate diagnosis. An adolescent doctor or gynecologist (a doctor who specializes in women health) would be able to diagnose and provide the best treatment options available.
If you need help finding a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the [Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist.
