Why Won't My Mom Let Me Live?!

The question
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am graduating high school next week and I want to enjoy summer but my mom said I need to get a job or volunteer or something. Why won't she just let me live?!

TeenHealthFX understands how challenging it can be to disagree with your parents. We suggest making the time to talk to your mom without distractions. Try to go into the conversation open-minded and to listen to what your mom has to say. It is important not to get defensive or start the conversation that way to avoid the conversation being over before it even starts. Explain to your mom that you’d like her to be open minded, too. There may be reasons she wants you to work or volunteer that you did not realize. Hear her out and try to come up with a compromise.
Remember even though you disagree, she is still your mom and being honest and respectful goes a long way. Good luck!
