The question

Dear TeenHealthFX,

My boyfriend wants me to give him oral sex. Can I get an std from it or that only from sex? I'm confused.

The answer

Yes, it is possible to get a sexually transmitted disease (STD) from oral sex. The [CDC also explains, anyone exposed to an infected partner can get an STD in the mouth, throat, genitals, or rectum. Some examples of STD’s that can be transmitted during oral sex are syphilis, gonorrhea, and intestinal infections.

TeenHealthFX would like to mention the importance of practicing safe sex. We encourage all teens to use condoms every time they engage in any type of sexual activity. You can lower your chances of giving or getting STDs during oral sex by using a condom, dental dam or other barrier method every time you have oral sex. Condoms are 98% in preventing the transmission of sexually transmitted infections when used correctly and on every sexual encounter.
