The answer

Unfortunately, TeenHealthFX cannot diagnose or treat over the internet. For informational purposes, Mono, short for infectious mononucleosis is a contagious virus caused by the Epstein-Barr (EBV) virus. It is spread through saliva by kissing and sharing food and/or drinks. According to the [CDC, it is very common among teenagers. In fact, about 1 in 4 teens usually end up being diagnosed with it. The symptoms of Mono range from mild to severe and there is no specific treatment.

If you suspect your son has Mono, we strongly recommend taking him to a doctor to get checked as soon as possible. Depending on the severity of it, the doctor will determine what the treatment plan is. If your son has mild symptoms such as fever, sore throat, and head/body aches; he may just need time to rest and recover. A severe symptom would be the enlargement of the spleen which requires your son to avoid sports and activities that require physical activity. As a result, we strongly recommend your son get seen to determine whether or not he has Mono or any other possible illness.
