The question

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Dear Sir/Madam, English is my second language. I have been diagnosed with having Mycoplasma genitalium ( I am male). I have read that it is transmitted sexually, however my wife does not have the bacteria. How is this possible? Both me and her have not had other sexual partners for a long time. For me she is my first and I have not had any sexual encounters with anybody else.

The answer

Unfortunately, TeenHealthFX cannot diagnose or treat over the internet. We are glad you have seen a doctor already. Yes, Mycoplasma Genitalium can be transmitted sexually, however it can also be contracted from skin to skin contact. This means you do not have to have sexual intercourse or be sexual with someone to get it. We strongly recommend that you follow whatever the doctor prescribed and to ask them any questions that may be concerning you.
